The Top Home Design Trends to Watch for This Year

Posted on February 22, 2018 by Miller and Smith Blog Team

Another year has come and gone, which also means that another group of trends have come in and out of our radar. No longer will be the marble motifs and blush pinks of before, but a new class of aesthetically pleasing home design trends are about to arrive. Just in time for your family to purchase a new Miller & Smith home, we are here to round up our best guesses (with a little bit of help from the experts) for what we will be seeing in homes across the country, on Pinterest, and all over Instagram. Below, check out the trends you will surely want to try this year:

Monochrome

Sometimes coordinating different colors can be a challenge, so this year, just pick one! After you’ve decided which color you want to focus on, use varying shades of this color throughout your home mixed in with other neutrals like white, taupe, gray, or brown.

Retro sofas

We knew it was only a matter of time until the oddly shaped furniture trend came full circle, and we think that this year it will definitely be front and center. Uniquely shaped sofas can create a welcoming and cohesive space in common areas of the home, like this recreation room in the Aria at Brambleton West Park.

Charcoal

This almost, but not quite, black color is the best way to create a moody tone in any room without committing to a bold shade that can be overwhelming. We like to look at this color as a smooth transition away from the light to mid-toned grays that have been very on-trend over the past few years.

Geometric art

Nothing screams modern design like sharp edges and geometric shapes, which is why we are definitely on board to see some more geometric art pieces this year!

Florals

In recent years, we have seen popular home patterns come from a variety of inspirations including palm leaves, marble, stone, and watercolors. Though always a classic, florals are predicted to reign supreme as a coveted pattern option over the next few years.

Sage tones

What trend forecasters are calling the “new neutral” of 2018, this shade is an easy way to bring a feeling of serenity into your home. This muted and cool-toned green color is perfect for those who aren’t keen on brighter tones like lime or Kelly green.

Statement ceilings

Well Miller & Smith must have been way ahead of the trends, because if you’ve been to any of our model homes, you know we love a good statement ceiling! There are many different ways to incorporate these into your new Miller & Smith home, but the easiest ways are to use 2 toned paint in a tray ceiling, or create large geometric shapes.

Oversized wall art

Go big or go home doesn’t always apply, but in the case of wall art, we would have to agree with this saying. Take some cues from our Next Level Homes at Upper West One Loudoun with oversized art on the wall that will make a big impact, and better yet, eliminate the need for matching multiple pieces together in a gallery.

Only time will tell which if these trends will be popular in 2018, but we are excited to find out! Check out our trend report blog from last year to see which predictions came true, and be sure to follow along as we continue to bring you new model homes for even more design inspiration.
