By now, you may have started your holiday shopping, or decorated your home for the season of lights! It is easy to get distracted by what can be an overwhelming holiday season with guests to host and events to plan. Make it a point this year to keep your home and family safe with some quick tips and reminders from Miller & Smith!
Climb safely: If you plan to use a ladder to hang decorations up in your home, make sure to inspect the ladder first! This may seem like an unnecessary step, but if your ladder is old, or doesn’t follow the applicable safety guidelines, then there is a chance it is unsteady. Additionally, if you are using a straight or extension ladder, it is a good idea to have someone hold the bottom of the ladder for you.
Double check alarms: If you didn’t remember to replace the batteries in your smoke detectors during Daylight Savings (tisk, tisk), make sure to test them out and replace batteries before putting up all of your holiday décor.
Assess all string lights: When you are unpacking boxes of lights from last year, inspect each string for cracked bulbs, loose connections, and frayed cords. Any faulty lights can be a fire hazard, so double-check everything!
Isolate candles: While candles are a great way to add festive scents to your home during the holiday season, any open flame can be hazardous, especially if you have children or pets. Make sure candles are not too close to the ground, plants, or any other flammable objects. Keep candles contained and up on higher surfaces, and don’t forget to blow them out before you go to bed!
Time your lights: If you tend to be forgetful with turning exterior and interior lights on and off, hook up a few light timers to each outlet. This will reduce your energy costs and make sure all of your lights turn on and off at the right time each day. It is also important to unplug everything if you leave your home at any time.
Safety is such an important part of being able to enjoy the holidays, so make sure to take all of the necessary precautions for a safe holiday season in your new Miller & Smith home!
