Posted on October 5, 2022 by Miller and Smith Blog Team

Fall is a time when the weather changes as much as the leaves.

Both relax and cool down become something wholly special. Miller & Smith understands special, as we pour it into every new home we build in Virginia and Maryland.

The communities in which we build provide all sorts of amazing opportunities to get out and enjoy the region.

Here are some autumn events near Miller & Smith communities that we know you’re going to love.

Your family will have a blast with a free kid-friendly scavenger hunt, farm tour, bouquet making stand, live bluegrass music, and lunches that can be purchased from José Andrés’ Pepe food truck! It’s a great way to learn, explore, and appreciate all a farm can do and be. Plus, there’s a prize for everyone who finishes the scavenger hunt! The fall activities at the Farm at Halley Rise will create a lifetime of great memories.

Fields of Fear
Everyone loves Cox Farms, especially when the moon is full, and it transforms into Cox Farms’ Fields of Fear! Open until November 5, 7:30–11pm on Friday and Saturday nights (plus Sunday, October 9 and Sunday, October 23), you’ll explore over 20 acres of spooky attractions. Haunted hayrides, shriek-filled wooded strolls, and a nightmarish corn maze all wait to test your bravery—and delicious treats are ready to reward you. Too scary? Then come to Cox Farms’ Fall Festival during the day instead!

Caffeine & Chocolate
Get ready for the tastiest weekend of the year! On November 5 & 6 at the Dulles Expo Center, it’s time to experience the DMV Chocolate and Coffee Festival. Here, top coffee shops, coffee roasters, chocolatiers, gourmet food vendors, and artisans from DC, Maryland, Virginia, and abroad wait to take your tastebuds on a journey like never before. Sip coffees from around the world, taste chocolates of every form, and explore other unique products like teas, soaps, candles, gifts, and art! This might be the most delicious festival ever to come to the Expo Center—certainly a great fall outing for your entire family.

Stafford, VA
Cascades at Embrey Mill is the active adult section of vibrant Embrey Mill. Our Villa Homes offer relaxed designs, comforting spaces, and places to really embrace the low-maintenance lifestyle Cascades provides. Think of Cascades as your home base, and see what fall treats you can expect living here:

Savor Local Foods
Fall festivals really came about as annual celebrations of good harvests. Continuing this tradition, and one of the benefits of living in Cascades, is Fredericksburg Food Co-Op’s Harvest Celebration. Come on October 22, from 3:00–7:00pm, and enjoy local foods prepared right in the co-op whether you’re a member or not! Meet local farmers and producers at this fun festival where proceeds are used to help reduce food insecurity in the community. Get something delicious and feel great as you “share the harvest” with others.

Run Halloween Hill
Presented by Embrey Mill and Arsenal Events, it’s the Halloween 5K and Monster Mile! This Stafford Halloween tradition is ready to get you on your feet for a walk or run on October 29. Kids 12 and under can run the Monster Mile, while the rest of us can tackle Halloween Hill in the 5k! But it’s not just a run, as costumes are encouraged with prizes awarded. Plus, if you can’t make it in person, you can run virtually!

Walk in the Past
On November 5, Historic Kenmore presents their annual Night in Washington’s Day at 7pm and 8pm. This one-hour program takes guests back to the 18th century, let’s them learn about (and see!) historic lighting technology, and witness actors dramatically portraying two enslaved women using the cover of night to plan an escape. This special glimpse into the past starts and ends at Historic Kenmore’s visitor center. After the program, sample a selection of teas and cookies!

Ellicott City, MD
Miller & Smith’s single-family homes in Patapsco Crossing have to be seen to be believed. Their spaces are big, bold, and ready to welcome any family to their dream home. With high ceilings and an oversized island, the great room isn’t the only great room in these homes. And even better are all the amazing things you can do in Ellicott City and the surrounding areas, especially in the fall:

Straight from the Farm
The Maplelawn Farmer’s Market is open every Saturday until November 5, from 9:00am–1:00pm. Over 50 rotating vendors offer the best in local and handmade products and foodstuffs. All in one place, you’ll be able to find farm-fresh eggs, artisan pastries, locally made spirits, hand-crafted jewelry, and more. Celebrate this nearby tradition (since 2016) and know that you’re not just supporting local farmers, artists, and artisans, but you’re also backing an organization that goes above and beyond to build up and give back to the local community.

Wine, Dogs, and Live Music
Right on Main Street in Historic Ellicott City is The Wine Bin, stocking over 500 wines, craft beers, small batch spirits, artisan cheeses, crackers, and local handmade chocolates. And on October 21, from 6:00–8:00pm, you and your four-legged friends can enjoy Yappy Hour at the ‘Bin. This evening of music, wine, and dog cookies is just what you need to celebrate fall with your fur kids. Plus, proceeds benefit Pets on Wheels, a non-profit organization that brings therapy pets to people all over Maryland.

Haunted Ellicott City
And speaking of Main Street in Historic Ellicott City, come back on October 30, from 8:30–10:00pm, for a Haunted Main Street tour by Ellicott City History Tours. With over 250 years of history, Old Ellicott City is full of tales and legends… and ghosts!
