Meet Our Upper West Design Center Manager: Cynthia Kister

Ask Cynthia what makes a successful Design Center Manager and she’ll tell you it goes way beyond knowing color, texture, and composition. You also have to have an ear for design, which is to say an ability to listen, empathize and connect with people. In her own two words, it’s all about “serving and supporting” her homeowners, and putting in the work to understand their needs and desires on a deeper level. That’s how Cynthia takes her role to the Next Level at Upper West. Come on by and say hi.

Q: What gets you excited to come to work every day?
A: I feel very lucky because I definitely get to do the fun part of this business. Don’t get me wrong, helping people personalize their home and bring it to life with their selections and options, can be an emotional process. But when everything comes together it’s incredibly rewarding. People put a lot of faith in me to help steer them towards a vision that they will love. And that’s definitely what we’re going for here. Satisfaction is not enough. We want people to love their Miller & Smith home.
Q: What’s your best insider tip for enjoying One Loudoun?
A: I think people know we have a lot of great restaurants and shops, and the new Barnes & Noble and Starbucks are nice, but I like the little things that are truly geared towards locals like the farmers’ market. It’s a great place to bump into neighbors and mom-and-pop vendors from the area. Here at Upper West, we’re so lucky to front Central Park. I’m always amazed at how quickly you can get from the hustle and bustle of Downtown One Loudoun to a quiet bench in the park. It’s great.
Q: What’s your favorite design feature at Upper West?
A: Now this is a tough one because I really do believe these homes take architecture and design to another level in Loudoun County. It’s not one feature, it’s really Miller & Smith’s entire approach to home design. I love the mix of exposed-wood ceiling beams, steel-framed windows, and pale, wide-plank flooring. It’s layered and balanced, yet it creates a nice tension between rustic and modern that is really quite unique. The homes have an energy that you will definitely feel in yourself.

Meet Our Tallyn Ridge Sales Manager: Jackie Martinez

Jackie Martinez may have been born and raised in Virginia, but she has fully embraced her Miller & Smith home away from home in Frederick, Maryland. She loves being part of Tallyn Ridge and helping people discover what she herself discovered about Frederick. This town rocks! Some of the coolest, most creative boutiques, cafes, coffee shops and wine bars line the streets of downtown Frederick just two miles away. Jackie can’t wait to tell you about her favorites, so stop by and say hi today.

Q: What are people surprised to learn about you?
A: I think people are surprised to learn I have a degree in Biology. They wonder how I went from the studying life and living organisms to becoming a sales manager for Miller & Smith. For me, the thread that ties them together is my curiosity. I ask lots of questions. I enjoy getting to know people and learning what makes them tick. The best part is I get to help them create a home I know they’re going to love because it truly fits them and their personality.
Q: What are people surprised to learn about Tallyn Ridge?
A: The land here is special. It really is. I think people are surprised the first time they drive into the community and start looking around. Tallyn Ridge is up on a perch so there are views of the mountain valley. We’re also literally connected to Pinecliff Park. In fact, we have trails from the community that lead to acres of open space, ball fields, a boat launch on the Monocacy River, even picnic pavilions which people can reserve for family events. People love it.
Q: What’s your favorite design feature in your Townhome collection?
A: I think you’ll find our townhomes at Tallyn Ridge have all the features people expect from Miller & Smith. They feel very open and modern inside. Amazing kitchens and Great Rooms. Spacious Owners’ Suites. And plenty of storage. But what really makes them special is how they capture the beauty of our setting. Large windows fill every level with natural light and indoor/outdoor living spaces let people enjoy the beauty of Tallyn Ridge from the comfort of their home.
If you are interested to learn more about Frederick County’s most sought-after new home community, just steps to Pinecliff Park and Tallyn Ridge’s future pool, give Jackie a call at 240.439.4665.

Meet Our West Park at Brambleton Sales Manager: Eric Hansen

Eric Hansen is the consummate real estate pro, and for over 11 years now we’ve been fortunate to have him on our Miller & Smith team. This lifelong Virginia resident has a particular fondness for the beach, water, and all things outdoors. Which is one of the reasons he’s excited to be working at West Park at Brambleton. From the nearby trails, ponds and parks, to great outdoor community events, there’s so much to enjoy. For the full story, stop by Eric’s model and say hello today.

Q: What are people surprised to learn about you?
A: Well for starters, I’ve owned more boats than cars in my lifetime. I’ve been water skiing since age 12, and I really enjoy being active outdoors. So to me, Brambleton’s appeal goes way beyond the Town Center or convenience to the Dulles Corridor. If you like spending time outdoors, you’ll love the miles of trails that wind throughout the community—including a new section of trail that’s under construction right by West Park. And be sure to tell your dog about the new dog park that’s coming soon.
Q: What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
A: I’ve been working with Miller & Smith homebuyers for well over a decade, in communities throughout Virginia and Maryland. I definitely enjoy the process of going from first meeting to final home design and seeing people fall in love with their new home. One of the best parts of my job is running into past customers. Reconnecting and learning what they’ve been up to is really rewarding, and proves that buying a home is so much more than a transaction. I’ve been fortunate to create some really great relationships with people during my time with Miller & Smith.
Q: What makes your homes unique and appealing to families?
A: When people tour our decorated model for the first time, they’re often surprised by just how large it is. In fact, with some available extensions and a finished lower level, you can have up to 4,200 square feet of living space. The kitchen center island can include a built-in tabletop to comfortably seat six people. Even the garages are large—24 feet wide, which means plenty of room for your own boat, and all of your other recreation gear. And if you want to create a studio suite over the garage, for an in-law or college grad, we can accommodate this too. It’s really flexible and perfect for families of all sizes.

Our Return to Kingstowne in Alexandria, VA

Miller & Smith is very excited to bring a brand new 55+ community to Walhaven at Kingstowne, and believe it or not, we have been here in Kingstowne from the beginning!

In 1984, Miller & Smith rezoned about 1,300 acres of land in Fairfax County and at the time, it was the second largest rezoning in the county’s history. Only 12 miles from Washington D.C., it was the perfect location for a mixed-use community, where residents could live, shop, and dine, and have a shorter commute to work in the city.

Since developing the land back in ‘84, Miller & Smith has constructed about 1,500 out of the 5,800 homes. With easy access to the Capital Beltway and Metro stations, it is no surprise that today, Kingstowne is still a highly sought-after location to live. The Washington Post even refers to the community as “a vast planned community with hyperlocal traditions.”

Because of Kingstowne’s success thus far, we decided to return to our roots and continue to expand the options that homebuyers have when looking to purchase a new home in the Alexandria area. Our new Walhaven neighborhood in Kingstowne is designed specifically for homebuyers 55+ in a community that has existing amenities and conveniences nearby. This is the only new community of its kind in Alexandria!

We considered everything that active adults need, combined with the luxuries that they want, and from that came our new 3-level elevator townhomes. These two “lock & leave” designs are truly an exciting addition to our repertoire, and promote a low-maintenance lifestyle for those who need it the most. Featuring 2-car garages, private elevators, designer kitchens, and luxurious owner’s suites, your new home at Walhaven will be the talk of the town.

Meet our Walhaven at Kingstowne Sales Manager: Karen Owens

Although our new Walhaven at Kingstowne community speaks for itself, we knew that our sales manager needed to be passionate and really know our 55+ homebuyer. Enter: Karen Owens. The Grand Opening for our new 3-level elevator townhomes at Walhaven is this Saturday, August 11th & 12th, so we thought there is no better way to introduce you to the process than letting you get to know Karen a bit more!

Karen Owens was born in the small, rural town of Emporia, Virginia, and grew up with 10 brothers and sisters. Let that sink in for a moment. That’s almost two full Brady Bunches. Needless to say, Karen learned at an early age to work well with others, and just as importantly, to go after what she wants. These traits have served her well in her 20+ year career in new home sales. When Karen saw that Miller & Smith was building a 55+ community in Kingstowne, she knew it was the perfect fit. Read on to learn why you are going to love working with Karen Owens at Walhaven at Kingstowne.

Q: What excites you the most about being part of Walhaven at Kingstowne?

A: Well for starters I’ve lived in Alexandria for 40 years so I know what makes Kingstowne such a gem. When my friends and I talk about the perfect location, we want accessibility, walkability, and close proximity to recreation, grandkids, and daily conveniences. Few places can compete with Kingstowne for its convenience to the Beltway, Metro, and all the shops and restaurants of the town center. Walhaven is special because Kingstowne has a softer side as well. Mature trees. A lake with trails that wind around it. Parks and golf courses. Places to connect with nature. You really get the best of both worlds here.

Q: What’s the best part about working with Active Adults?

A: For me, helping people create their home is so much more than a job. Home is sacred. It’s not just one of the biggest investments we make in our lives, it’s one of the most personal. I really enjoy making that personal connection with my customers. I think that’s why I particularly like working with 55+ homebuyers. We relate to one another. I know how important it is to find a home you love today, yet continues to fit your needs 10 or 15 years down the road. Our townhomes are the perfect fit. An elevator is included. The floorplans are open with wide hallways and doorways. Lots of natural light and great spaces for entertaining. And they’re designed to minimize upkeep and maintenance. We even take care of all the landscaping. This really is easy-living at its finest.

Q: What’s your idea of fun?

A: For big fun, I like to travel. Get me on a plane to Italy and I’m in heaven. For day to day fun, I love listening to live music. Here in Kingstowne, Fiona’s Irish Pub is a great place to listen to live music and for bigger acts, The Birchmere is a great Alexandria venue. With the Beltway just minutes away, even Wolf Trap and the Kennedy Center are easily accessible. And when you’re ready to lock up and explore places beyond the DC region, Reagan National Airport is just 20 minutes away.

Are you ready for the lock and leave lifestyle at Walhaven at Kingstowne? With features that create a low-maintenance lifestyle that you are looking for, these gorgeous homes are perfect for those who have that wanderlust mentality! Give Karen a call at (703)755-5242 or email her at kowens@www.millerandsmith.com to schedule your appointment.

Q: Where were you born and raised and how long have you lived here?

A: I was born in Guiria, Venezuela and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. I’ve been in the Washington region for over 21 years now and one of the things I’ve always loved about this area is its diversity. Brambleton is also very international, which definitely makes it a richer, more interesting place to live.

Q: Best insider tip for people who don’t know Brambleton?

A: It’s funny, Brambleton has won so many local and national awards that sometimes I forget that not everyone knows it inside and out. The shops, restaurants and schools may get all the glory but for me the trails are the hidden gem of this community. They wind for miles so you can spend hours hiking, biking, or exploring the wildlife, ponds, fauna and simply reconnecting with nature.

Q: What’s your favorite design feature in The Garden District?

A: Lots of new homes are open and airy, but these townhomes really take it to another level. It starts with the high ceilings, tall windows, and indoor/outdoor living spaces. Even the stairwells are wide and the doors are tall, which make these home feel more like single family designs. And, of course, I’ve always loved Miller & Smith kitchens. I so want one of our infinity islands in my own home.
