Ashburn, VA Named the 30th Best Place to Live in the U.S. for 2017

In partnership with, Time Money has released the Best Places to Live in 2017, and on this list is Ashburn, VA, ranked at #30! Why does this pertain to us at Miller & Smith, you might ask? Well, it just so happens that we currently have 4 new home communities and an active adult community coming soon in the city of Ashburn! Time has ranked Ashburn on the list of top places to live for “its community amenities, low crime, and strong economy,” but we would also add that there are many opportunities to purchase the perfect home for your family.

Ashburn’s unique location northwest of D.C. makes it one of the most sought after places to live for people working in the Dulles Technology Corridor, a number of surrounding universities and medical centers, or for those who work in the city but don’t want to live there. Time reports that according to Moody’s Analytics, Ashburn is also predicted to see nearly 15% job growth between 2016 and 2021, which is also great news for anyone looking to move to the area, or those who may be looking for a new opportunity over the next few years.

In Time’s excerpt from the Best Places to Live in 2017 list, they mention one of our communities, One Loudoun, by name, highlighting the amazing community involvement and amenities that it offers. In addition to the “outdoor concerts, 5K races, a farmers’ markets, and other events”, this unique community continues to add exceptional restaurant options, has a gym, is home to The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, and the soon to open Barnes & Noble.

In addition, the Brambleton community has established its roots in Ashburn for over 15 years, and they aren’t stopping now! This repeat “community of the year” winner continues to grow and evolve by adding even more homes to its repertoire. On top of that, this community also boasts its own town center, multiple community centers, trails, amenities, and 3 brand new schools.

Get the Look: Kidspiration From Our Model Homes

It happens every year: school starts again, the first crisp fall day arrives, and all of a sudden your kids want to redecorate their bedrooms. Especially if you are looking to move into a new home, you are going to need a plan for the kids’ rooms in addition to your own. Each Miller & Smith model home features kid-inspired bedroom designs that are sure to bring out your inner interior designer, so take a look at some of our favorites and learn how you can get these different types of looks in your home!

Tone it down: So your child is begging you for a baseball themed room, but you’re really not looking forward to a collage of baseball cards across the walls. Instead, compromise with a muted palette and a few items like pillows and flags that coordinate with his or her favorite teams. This way, they get what they want but you also won’t get a headache every time you enter the room.

Go all out: Children, especially younger ones, tend to have a fascination with certain things, whether it is a movie character, a color, a food, or an animal. If they request to incorporate their “most favorite” thing into their room design, why not make it the ultimate inspiration for the space? We imagine that this children’s room in our Windchase model home at Cayden Ridge would be perfect for someone who loves bunny rabbits!

Create a calm space: You may not want to go crazy with lots of décor or very bright colors, especially if you are decorating a nursery. If you need these spaces to remain peaceful and calm, opt for pastels, soft surfaces, and minimal décor. The nursery in our Paramount model townhome at Tallyn Ridge works beautifully to accentuate the natural light coming in all three windows with blue pastel walls and white curtains.

Keep the theme: Sometimes decorating your kids’ rooms is more of a hassle than it’s worth. If you’re in a rush to get your new Miller & Smith home completely decorated, stick to the theme that you’ve been using all along! In this bunk bed room in our Calahan model home at Aspen North at Lake Linganore, a neutral palette mimics the nature-inspired design throughout the rest of the home while remaining playful and kid-approved!

Put hobbies on display: If you know that your children won’t be able to keep the room clear of sports equipment or music sheets, create a room where these can be a part of the design. Include smart storage, like shelves or hooks, to display items that your kids use for their favorite hobbies. This way, the design of the room will also be functional and help your kids stay organized.

Sophisti-kid: If this room makeover is coming at a time where your kids aren’t into stuffed animals or dolls anymore, there are many ways to create a young but sophisticated aesthetic for their room. Take the fashion-themed bedroom in our Hartwood model, for example. The navy walls and white bedding give it a more mature feel, while the accessories and décor keep it fresh and fun!
