Patio Parties Keep Summer Going.

Who says the fun of summer has to end at the stroke of midnight on Labor Day?

If you have a great patio, terrace or deck, forget what the calendar says and keep having those barbeques, cocktail parties and outdoor gatherings.

Miller & Smith is known for designing innovative outdoor living spaces that offer homeowners even more ways to relax, unwind and entertain.

In this post we’ll examine how to use furniture groupings, accessories and pops of color to turn your outdoor space into the perfect outdoor retreat.

On the deck of our Gramercy Park model at Maple lawn, we use warm summer colors and overstuffed cushions to provide a relaxed, fun outdoor atmosphere. It’s a vibe that inspires light conversations and everflowing sangria!

When coordinating you’re own space, consider bold, vibrant colors like we use here in our Greenwich model at One Loudoun.

Kick back on some comfortable furniture! Why not treat your bottom and back to these thrones, and bring a beachy vibe to your outdoor space?

These “L shaped” seating arrangements are the outdoor equivalent of the sectional sofa. They’re a great way to seat lots of guests and provide endless comfort!

Pop of color? Pillow fights? Whatever the reason, you definitely need plenty of throw pillows to accent your seating and create just the right setting for kicking back and enjoying the summer.

We can only hold our margaritas for so long. Am I right? Attachable side tables are a creative idea to add to your patio.

And don’t forget those odds and ends that express your own personality and tie your outdoor space together.

From Ashburn to Virginia’s Own “Italian Countryside.”

Miller & Smith homeowners living in Brambleton or One Loudoun are fortunate to have amazing onsite recreation amenities, either in place or coming soon. Brambleton has lots of shops, restaurants, swimming pools, parks, ball fields, a clubhouse and more. One Loudoun recently welcomed Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, one of the most innovative movie theaters in the country, and will soon be opening Bar Louie, Fresh Market and a host of other shops and restaurants. It’s also the future home of the Loudoun Hounds professional baseball team.

Of course, even with all there is to do in and around these communities, a change in scenery is always refreshing. Located about 30 minutes from Ashburn are The Plains and Middleburg, two quaint towns reminiscent of the lush countryside of Tuscany. Not only are the views breathtaking, there is always something to do, see, drink, and one of Miller & Smith’s favorites…taste!

For Wine Lovers:

Why go to Italy or Napa Valley when you can enjoy 10 wineries just minutes away from Ashburn? The wineries are open for wine tastings and tours. Since it’s always a good idea to have a designated driver, consider taking a bus or limo service. They offer tours of multiple wineries and are a great way to spend an entire day vineyard hopping. One of the must-sees is Linden Winery in Middleburg. Sip wine on the back patio overlooking beautiful vineyards and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

For Foodies:

Girasole, meaning “sunflower” in Italian, is the perfect place to eat dinner after spending a day in the Virginia countryside. Girasole serves Northern Italian cuisine. Start off your evening with a cocktail or a glass of wine paired with an appetizer and warm bread that melts in your mouth. The menu consists of veal, fish, and house made pastas. Using local, organic ingredients, the chef is always creating long lists of seasonal chef specials to add variety to the menu each day. After dinner, a dessert tray is brought to your table to show off the delectable varieties of pastries and gelatos, also made in house. Girasole is featured in Northern Virginia Magazine as one of the top 50 restaurants in Northern Virginia. Brunch is also offered on Sundays. Reservations are recommended.

For Horse Enthusiasts:

Great Meadow is located right in The Plains, home to The Gold Cup horse races in May each year. Every Saturday night, Great Meadow hosts twilight Polo matches along with other equestrian events (May-September). Tour the stables and take a look at all of the horses. A great place for kids as well!

Great Meadow: 5089 Old Tavern Road, The Plains, VA. www.greatmeadow.org

For Shoppers:

Walk the streets of Middleburg for an entire day’s worth of shopping. The historic buildings and cobblestone streets add to the charm of this small town. Whether you want to buy furniture, antiques, clothing, jewelry, etc., Middleburg has it all. Take a break from all the shopping and grab a quick bite to eat at one of the local delis or outdoor taverns.

Want to turn your day trip into a weekend getaway?

Not a problem. The Plains and Middleburg are filled with plenty of charming Bed & Breakfasts. After a short trip to Middleburg and The Plains, head back home to Brambleton or One Loudoun feeling refreshed without the expenses of a vacation.

Instagramming One Loudoun

If you’re a fan of the ridiculously addictive photo-sharing site, Instagram, then you’ve probably heard the big news. You can now shoot and post up to 15 seconds of video to your Instagram stream.

While we think that’s cool, and we look forward to experimenting with it, we’re a bit more old school when it comes to Instagram.

We love the way it turns simple details and close-up stills into little works of art.

Recently we spent some time touring our models at One Loudoun, which are filled with 2,700 square feet of Instagram inspiration—cool textures, patterns, colors and funky accessories inside and out.

Take a look then come see what inspires you. For directions to our models at One Loudoun, click here.
